Postcards from Banja Luka at game night

Amira covers the café table with a board game, snacks, and postcards from Banja Luka. One card shows Kastel Fortress beside the Vrbas River, where old walls meet a lively modern city. Another shows Ferhadija Mosque, reconstructed after its wartime destruction and reopened as a place of worship. Ana must answer a language question before every move. She asks about food, prices, rooms, weather, invitations, and places of origin. Emir wants pobjeda, while Mrvica wants the moving pieces. The Banja Luka postcards turn review night into another journey beyond Sarajevo.

Grammar

Remember your useful first-person verbs

Volim, želim, imam, and govorim let you say a great deal about yourself. Follow each verb with a familiar object or language word. Use them during the game to express a preference, a wish, a possession, or a language ability.

  • Volim ovu igru.: I like this game.
  • Želim još kahve.: I want more coffee.
  • Imam dobru kartu.: I have a good card.

Remember questions and invitations

Use Kakvo je vrijeme? To ask about weather, Hoćeš li? To offer a choice, and Hajde da to suggest a shared action. These patterns turn separate vocabulary lists into conversation. Choose the one that matches whether you need information, an answer, or group action.

  • Kakvo je vrijeme?: How is the weather?
  • Hoćeš li igrati?: Do you want to play?
  • Hajde da igramo još jednom.: Let us play one more time.

Say again

Warm up with four lines you already know.

  • Volim burek.: I love burek.
  • Želim vodu.: I want water.
  • Imam sobu.: I have a room.
  • Govorim bosanski.: I speak Bosnian.

Lesson A. Practice your everyday verbs

This review sticks to four first-person forms: Volim, Želim, Imam, and Govorim. Draw a card and finish a complete sentence before you move. Useful answers include Volim sirnicu, Želim vodu, Imam malu sobu, and Govorim malo bosanski. Amira accepts only a full sentence, since speed does not beat accuracy. If a line is weak, say it još jednom with one word changed. You are aiming for present-tense speech that comes out automatically, not a new grammar table.

  • Pick the verb by meaning first, then add one familiar object.
  • Say the whole sentence aloud before you move a game piece.
  • Repeat a weak line još jednom with one changed word.

Match the review verbs

Match each Bosnian form with the idea it expresses.

volim
želim
imam
govorim
hajde

Lesson B. Switch questions under pressure

Now switch topics the way real conversation does. Ask Koliko košta? At the shop, Kakvo je vrijeme? For Trebević, Hoćeš li šetati? For the park, and Odakle si? Over kahva. A room square needs an imam sentence. A food square needs volim or želim. Answer every question with a complete present-tense sentence. When Mrvica knocks the cards over, mix two topics in one short exchange. The review works once you can switch topics without reaching for English.

  • Hear the question word before you choose your answer.
  • Keep ja/ti as the default, and add molim or hvala in shop talk.
  • Mix two old topics when one topic feels too easy.

Još jednom

Amira's café table holds a board, cards, kahva, and one curious cat.

Fun facts

Kastel guards a Vrbas crossing

Kastel Fortress stands beside the Vrbas River in Banja Luka. The site reflects many layers of settlement and defense around an important river crossing. Its walls now frame walks, events, and public gatherings rather than military control. Kastel connects the modern city with the strategic value of the river.

The Vrbas shapes Banja Luka

The Vrbas River gives Banja Luka a strong natural axis. Water, bridges, and tree-lined banks shape movement through the city. Upstream canyons also support rafting and other outdoor activities. A Vrbas postcard makes the city feel connected to both urban life and mountain water.

Ferhadija was rebuilt

The Ferhadija Mosque is an important landmark in Banja Luka. It was destroyed during the war and later reconstructed through careful work with historical evidence and recovered stone. The reopened mosque again serves worshippers and the wider city. Its return shows how rebuilding a landmark can restore both use and memory.

Bosnia today

Emigration is reshaping the population

Sustained emigration is reshaping communities across Bosnia and Herzegovina. Many younger adults leave for education, higher wages, or more predictable careers elsewhere in Europe and beyond. Low birth rates and an aging population deepen the decline, while official statistics struggle to measure everyone who has moved. Families maintain strong ties across borders, but schools, workplaces, and smaller towns can lose people faster than they replace them. Demographic decline is not an abstract number, because it changes who remains to build local institutions and community life.
