Zašto je kahva ona?
Kahva ends in a, so it belongs in the she pile, not because coffee is girly.
G.1aBosnian coffee set, Baščaršija
Why you are here
Today you learn why kahva lives in the she pile, and how to file the next word the same way. The three pile labels are on, ona, and ono. On means he. Ona means she. Ono means leftover. People follow the person, so Emir is on and Ana is ona without a spelling trick. Things follow the last letter of the list word. Filing is the whole job for this chapter. Later jobs will copy whatever pile you pick today, so a wrong pile today wrecks the endings tomorrow.
Why English lies
English lies because it uses he and she for people and it for almost every thing. Your husband is he, your wife is she, and coffee, a bridge, and a city are all it. Bosnian still uses on, ona, and ono for people, and it uses those same words for things. Coffee landed in the she pile, a bridge landed in the he pile, and beer landed in the leftover pile. The drink did not become a woman. The last letter a stuffed kahva into an old club with kuća. The Bosnian word for this is rod, which means gender, and you can forget the school label as long as you remember the piles.
A line you already say
Book 1 already gave you Ana’s line Želim kahvu, which means I want coffee. Ignore the moved letter for one more chapter. The list word is kahva, and that last a is the pile stamp. Kahvu is still coffee in the she pile. Chapter 2 will explain the job that changed the ending. Today you only file kahva as she, because she-pile words take she-pile endings later.
The pattern
You guess the pile from the last letter of the list word, which is the boring form sitting in a vocab list. A word that ends in a usually belongs to the she pile, such as kahva, kuća, and ulica, because those words joined an old a club. A word that ends in a consonant usually belongs to the he pile, such as most, dan, and hljeb. A word that ends in o or e usually belongs to the leftover pile, such as pivo, more, and Sarajevo. People skip that cheat sheet because Emir is a man and Ana is a woman. Keep the sheet for coffee, and remember the pile is a filing club, not a vibe.
| Last letter | Pile | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| a | she (ona) | kahva, kuća, ulica, Ana |
| a consonant | he (on) | most, dan, hljeb, Emir |
| o or e | leftover (ono) | pivo, more, ime, Sarajevo |

Most ends in t, so it belongs in the he pile.
The pests
Two words refuse the cheat sheet, and you should memorize them today because they prove the last letter is a guess, not a law. Tata means dad and ends in a, but it is still he, because dad is a man. Auto means car and ends in o, but it is still he, because this loanword joined the he club anyway. Do not argue with them. More pests will show up later, and these two are enough for this chapter.
The bit that tricks you
The trap is to hear kahvu and think the coffee switched piles to he. It did not. Kahva and kahvu are the same she. The a is the pile stamp on the list word. The u is a later job mark for the thing Ana wants. He-pile most will get a different mark in that same job, and leftover-pile pivo will get a different mark again. If you file coffee as he because you heard a u, you will pick the wrong ending forever.
| Job | Form | Pile |
|---|---|---|
| This is coffee. | kahva | she (ona) |
| I want coffee. | kahvu | still she |

More ends in e, so it belongs in the leftover pile with pivo.

Next
You now know why coffee, the bridge, and beer live in different piles, and that the pile is a filing club. Kahvu did not make coffee a he. Chapter 2 is why Želim kahvu is not Želim kahva, which is naming the coffee versus wanting it. You still will not get a seven-job chart.
